Teacher Fired for Sharing Pro-Life and Pro-Israel Views Takes Legal Action

Anita Meston, a 63-year-old teacher at Biddick Academy, was dismissed after answering students’ questions about abortion and the Israel-Palestine conflict, and she is now suing for discrimination.

While covering a Year 8 history lesson on the bombing of Dresden, Anita Meston responded to student inquiries by stating she was pro-Israel and, later, pro-life, citing her Christian faith and personal experiences. The headteacher subsequently informed her that sharing personal opinions in class was prohibited and terminated her employment after only six months at Biddick Academy. The dismissal sparked criticism that schools are censoring Christian perspectives.

Meston, a veteran educator, has taken the case to an employment tribunal, with legal assistance from Alliance Defending Freedom, claiming unlawful discrimination. The incident follows similar controversies involving teachers and social workers who faced job losses for expressing standard Christian viewpoints. The case highlights ongoing tensions over freedom of belief and speech in UK workplaces and schools.

Why it matters

The case tests how far employers can restrict teachers' religious expression in the classroom.
