Teachers criticize new smart-glasses rules for college exam proctors
The Education Ministry issued a 44-page guide on handling smart-glasses during the upcoming College Scholastic Ability Test, prompting teacher unions to argue the rules overburden proctors.
A 44-page instruction manual from the Education Ministry outlines procedures for detecting smart-glasses during the College Scholastic Ability Test scheduled for November 19, dedicating roughly half a page to the issue. Proctors must request that any suspected device be placed on the desk for inspection and warn that refusal could be treated as cheating, with results potentially invalidated. The Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union argues that individual proctors are given insufficient tools and clear criteria, exposing them to student complaints and possible negligence claims.
The Korean Federation of Teachers’ Associations echoes these concerns, noting the physical and mental strain already faced by exam supervisors. Recent incidents at Yonsei University and the University of Seoul, where AI-enabled glasses were discovered, prompted the ministry to act, but unions urge the government to develop systematic detection methods rather than shifting responsibility onto teachers.
