Teachers union leader urges back-to-school boycott of Target over ICE stance
Union head Randi Weingarten called on AFT members to avoid Target this school season, criticizing the retailer’s silence on federal immigration enforcement.
Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, launched a “Shop Smart, Not Target” initiative, urging educators and parents to boycott Target during the back-to-school period. The move follows Target’s refusal to publicly condemn recent ICE arrests, which the union says contradicts community safety. Weingarten cited the killings of Alex Pretti and Renée Good as evidence of the urgency of the issue, despite the victims’ involvement in violent crimes.
The AFT, a significant shareholder in Target, also highlighted its members’ substantial spending on school supplies at the retailer. An online portal has been set up to help members locate alternative shopping options in their zip codes. The campaign reflects a broader focus on immigration policy rather than the declining test scores.
Why it matters
The boycott could pressure a major retailer and influence how corporations address immigration controversies.
