Tech analyst creates AI chatbot to help his incarcerated father communicate
CJ Jones built an AI contact called Nova for his dad’s prison tablet, later turning the tool into the for-profit firm Beyond Bars AI.
Growing up with his father behind bars since he was one, CJ Jones frequently used phone calls to update Charles Jones Sr. on the outside world. Recognizing his father’s difficulty keeping pace with modern technology, Jones programmed a chatbot—dubbed Nova—to run on the Securus tablets used in Missouri prisons, allowing his dad to submit prompts by voice or text. Nova answers in a conversational style, even describing images it cannot display, and has become a regular communication tool for his father and other inmates.
The prototype, first tried in 2024, evolved into the commercial venture Beyond Bars AI. While Jones highlights the convenience of instant information, he warns that the underlying large-language models can generate false statements and are unsuitable for legal or medical advice. The story illustrates how families of the incarcerated are inventing digital workarounds to navigate the challenges of the criminal-legal system.
