Durán highlights prominent names—including Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, Marc Andreessen, Mark Zuckerberg, Balaji Srinivasan, Sam Altman and JD Vance—who have built companies like PayPal, Palantir, Tesla and Facebook while championing digital currencies and “exit” strategies that bypass traditional government control. The book, an instant one outlet bestseller, claims these actors are financing efforts to carve out tax-free zones and sovereign jurisdictions, exemplified by projects like the libertarian enclave Próspera in the Caribbean. Durán points to rising protests against data-center construction and crypto scams as evidence of public backlash, and he urges readers to recognize that a choice must be made between billionaire power and democratic governance.
