Tech CEOs Join US Army Unit to Drive Future Warfare Innovation

Four senior tech executives were commissioned as lieutenant colonels in the US Army’s new Executive Innovation Corps to advise on next-generation combat technologies.

During a ceremony in June 2025, four senior technology managers—Meta’s Andrew Bosworth, Palantir’s Shyam Sankar, OpenAI’s Kevin Weil, and Thinking Machines Lab’s Bob McGrew—were sworn in as lieutenant colonels in the US Army. They will serve in the newly formed Executive Innovation Corps, a unit tasked with modernising the armed forces through Silicon Valley-style disruption. The corps aims to replace conventional war-fighting approaches with advanced digital, AI, and sensor technologies.

This development signals a departure from earlier tech industry pacifism, as prominent figures such as Elon Musk and Peter Thiel have publicly endorsed closer ties between big tech and global militaries. The initiative underscores the growing influence of private-sector innovation on future combat strategies worldwide.
