Tech solutions eyed to stop deadly crowd surges after Kolkata stampede

A stampede at Kolkata's Chorbagan Durga Puja venue left several dead and many injured, prompting calls for smarter crowd-monitoring technology.

A sudden surge of people at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata caused a stampede that killed several individuals and injured many others, with heavy rain cited as a contributing factor. The tragedy has revived debate over the role of technology in preventing similar incidents, highlighting tools like digital ticketing, people counters and AI-powered cameras that can estimate crowd density and flag rapid buildups.

An earlier example from the 2025 Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj showed how a command centre using hundreds of AI-enabled cameras and drones monitored crowd flow in real time. For alerts to be effective, they must reach police, organizers and gate staff, allowing actions such as halting entry or opening dispersal routes. Nonetheless, experts warn that AI cannot compensate for poor venue design, narrow exits or inadequate evacuation drills, and that privacy safeguards are essential as surveillance expands.

Why it matters

Understanding how technology can warn of dangerous crowd conditions may help prevent future stampedes and save lives.
