Tech Titans Push Authoritarian Ideologies into U.S. Politics, Book Claims
Gil Durán’s book The Nerd Reich argues that Silicon Valley billionaires such as Marc Andreessen and Peter Thiel are spreading authoritarian ideas that now shape American politics.
Gil Durán’s new work, The Nerd Reich, compiles existing reporting to depict Silicon Valley’s elite—Marc Andreessen, Peter Thiel, Elon Musk and others—as architects of an authoritarian vision he calls TESCREAL, an acronym for transhumanism, extropianism, singularitarianism, cosmism, rationalism, effective altruism and longtermism. Durán traces Thiel’s adoption of ideas from the 1997 book The Sovereign Individual and his sway over politicians like J.D.
Vance, suggesting that current government obsessions, including a push for Greenland, reflect tech lobbying. The book describes ongoing attempts to create regulation-free “network cities” in locations ranging from Honduras to Sonoma County, and cites Balaji Srinivasan’s call for tech-controlled zones in San Francisco. It also highlights extremist proposals from alt-right thinker Curtis Yarvin, whose concepts have found an audience among tech barons, and notes Thiel’s public rejection of democracy. While relying heavily on secondary sources, Durán warns that the immense wealth of these figures grants them outsized influence over elections and policy, turning their faith-like belief system into a new religion for the AI age.
