Tech vendors push forward-deployed engineers to recoup massive AI spending
Vendors are expanding forward-deployed engineering teams to help customers implement AI faster, while raising concerns about lock-in and IP risks.
At a recent technology conference, Salesforce executives highlighted the impact of forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) on speeding AI adoption, echoing a broader industry trend. Major vendors—including Palantir, AWS, Anthropic, SAP, Salesforce and Workday—have poured billions into FDE units to embed engineers directly at client sites. Compensation for U.S. FDEs now averages over $216,000 annually, reflecting high demand.
While firms claim FDEs help customers overcome scarce AI talent and deliver projects faster, Gartner cautions that over-reliance may lock customers into vendor ecosystems, risk intellectual-property leakage, and hinder eventual hand-over. Experts advise firms to define clear governance, exit strategies and ownership rules before engaging FDEs.
Why it matters
Businesses must understand the benefits and risks of vendor-provided AI engineers to protect their technology investments.
