Technical glitch in deepfake software leads Spanish police to capture alleged certificate fraudster
A brief pause in real-time face-swap software revealed the identity of a man accused of forging digital certificates, allowing Spanish police to arrest him.
Police in Spain arrested an unnamed individual suspected of repeatedly forging digital certificates after a momentary failure in his deepfake face-swap program revealed his real visage to a verification camera. The man is alleged to have made 38 attempts to pose as 30 different people, securing certificates on multiple occasions. To bypass the live-video check, he combined real-time deepfake manipulation, strategically placed colored spotlights, and counterfeit documents that mimicked holographic security features.
The operation also employed VPNs and a web of more than 320 phone lines across 24 devices, many registered under stolen identities sourced from outlets in the Murcia region. A search of his residence uncovered a heavily encrypted laptop, several mobile phones, storage media and additional forged paperwork. Authorities say the certificates could have been used for signing contracts, authorising transactions and interacting with public bodies online, giving the fraudster a potent tool for further cybercrime.
