Technip Energies lands EPC deal to add hydrocracker and deasphalting units at HPCL's Mumbai refinery

Technip Energies secured an EPC contract from Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited to deliver a 550-KTA integrated hydrocracker and an 850-KTA solvent deasphalting unit for the Mumbai refinery modernization.

Technip Energies has won a major engineering, procurement and construction contract from state-run Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited for the Lube Modernization and Bottom Upgradation project at the Mumbai refinery. The scope includes a 550-kilotonne-per-annum integrated hydrocracker with catalytic dewaxing and an 850-kilotonne-per-annum solvent deasphalting unit, both to be tied into the existing plant. The deal is categorized as a large award, valued between €250 million and €500 million, and will be added to Technip Energies' Project Delivery backlog in Q3 2026.

The new units aim to raise production of lube-oil base stocks and enable the refinery to convert heavier streams into higher-value products, improving resource utilisation. This investment aligns with India's ongoing effort to modernise its refining infrastructure to meet rising domestic demand for fuels and specialty products. Loïc Chapuis, president of Project Delivery and Services at Technip Energies, highlighted the long-standing relationship with HPCL and the company's confidence in delivering the complex upgrade.

Why it matters

The contract will enhance India's refining capacity and support domestic production of higher-value lubricants and fuels.
