Teen Dies After Leaping onto Boston Subway Tracks to Rescue Girlfriend
A 19-year-old Boston commuter died when he jumped onto the tracks to save his girlfriend, who survived with serious injuries.
Frankey Wright Jr., a 19-year-old from Lowell, Massachusetts, lost his life on his inaugural trip on Boston’s MBTA Orange Line after his girlfriend slipped from the platform at Forest Hills station and fell onto the tracks. He jumped down to rescue her, but contact with the electrified third rail caused fatal injuries, and he was pronounced dead on site. His girlfriend sustained serious injuries and remains in critical condition at a local hospital.
The MBTA Transit Police are conducting a full investigation, ruling out criminal intent. Family members described Wright as a caring young man who worked with autistic children and ran a clothing line, and they are calling for stronger platform safety measures such as screen doors. The MBTA is preparing a pilot request for platform barriers at select stations, while a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to cover funeral costs.
