Teen driver and medical-equipment CEO killed in head-on crash on Hudson Valley Route 28
A 19-year-old driver and a 72-year-old medical-equipment executive died after a head-on collision on Route 28 in Olive, New York.
Early Sunday morning on Route 28 near Kingston, a 2024 Chevrolet driven by 19-year-old Peter B. Bonenfant veered into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a 2021 Mercedes driven by 72-year-old Philip F. Jacobus. The impact occurred just before 6:50 a.m. in the Town of Olive, Ulster County. First responders extricated both occupants and transported Bonenfant to HealthAlliance Hospital and Jacobus to MidHudson Regional Hospital, where each later succumbed to injuries.
New York State Troopers are investigating the cause of the lane crossover, which remains unexplained. Jacobus, a Kingston resident, founded the Wall Street-based medical-equipment firm Owen Kane Holdings and launched the DOTmed marketplace. Bonenfant, a former Smithtown West lacrosse star who had committed to Queens University of Charlotte before opting for an electrician apprenticeship, was remembered for his vibrant personality.
