Teen football player’s lingering concussion symptoms reveal hidden brain vessel abnormality

After a helmet clash in August 2023, New Jersey teen Logan Coleridge experienced persistent dizziness, headaches and memory problems, leading doctors to discover an arteriovenous malformation in his brain.

A helmet-to-helmet impact during Logan Coleridge’s freshman football season triggered months of debilitating dizziness, light sensitivity, memory loss and intense headaches. Despite multiple therapies and medications, his symptoms persisted, leading his mother Becky to seek a concussion specialist who ordered an MRI and neck X-ray in early spring 2024. Imaging revealed an arteriovenous malformation in the occipital brain area, a condition that can cause a range of neurological issues.

After evaluating treatment options, the family chose surgical removal; Dr. Howard Riina performed a craniotomy at NYU Langone on July 17, 2024, successfully excising the AVM. Logan was discharged three days later, now experiencing only occasional headaches managed with medication, and has returned to school, celebrated his 16th birthday, taken driving lessons, and is preparing to play football again.
