Teen Hiker Killed by Lightning at Utah’s Mount Timpanogos Amid Storm

Around 6 a.m. Friday, nine hikers traveling in two separate parties approached the summit of Mount Timpanogos when severe weather prompted them to seek shelter. A lightning bolt struck the shelter, critically wounding a 19-year-old male hiker; first responders were unable to save him and he was pronounced dead. Four other hikers descended on their own, suffering only minor injuries and receiving hospital evaluation.

Sgt. Garett Dutson of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that several agencies participated in the rescue, which was delayed by ongoing storm conditions, and that the cause of death remains under investigation. Authorities have not released the victim’s name and have issued warnings about rapidly changing mountain weather, emphasizing that small shelters do not protect against lightning. The sheriff’s office will provide further details as the investigation proceeds.
