Teen Innovator Creates Zero-Knowledge Proof Method for Puzzle Verification
Eighteen-year-old Celine Zhang of Princeton, New Jersey, developed a zero-knowledge proof system that lets puzzle solvers confirm their solutions without revealing them.
Celine Zhang, an 18-year-old student from Princeton, New Jersey, built a zero-knowledge proof mechanism inspired by puzzle games where an avatar merges blocks. Her system allows a solver to prove they know a puzzle’s solution without disclosing the answer, offering only constrained hints for verification. The project earned a spot at the Regeneron Science Talent Search and draws on concepts that may strengthen cybersecurity, machine-learning models, and blockchain identity checks.
Zhang studies at Phillips Exeter Academy, co-heads its engineering club, and co-leads the Junior Computer Programming Club, where she mentors younger students. She also teaches computer-science classes at AlphaStar Academy and sings soprano in the co-ed a cappella group PEADQUACS. The work showcases how abstract mathematics can address real-world privacy and authentication challenges.
