Teen Killed and Three Injured in Bronx Car Meet Shooting After Social-Media Rally

Police say a car meet organized through social media erupted into gunfire at about 5:40 a.m. on Sunday on East 233rd Street near Boston Road in Eastchester, resulting in the death of 18-year-old Werling Mendez, who was hit in the head. A 22-year-old man suffered a chest wound, while two women, ages 20 and 25, were shot in the foot; the older woman was working as a slushie vendor for a local business. A 37-year-old woman was also robbed of her cellphone and a diamond chain and taken to Jacobi Medical Center in stable condition.

More than 60 shell casings were found at the scene, yet no arrests have been made and investigators have not identified a target. Earlier footage showed reckless driving and damage to a police vehicle, for which two suspects were briefly detained and released. NYPD officials warned that such gatherings will persist without stronger criminal-justice consequences.
