Teen killed in shooting outside high school football game in Bakersfield

A 17-year-old was fatally shot near the field during Independence High School's season-opening football game on Friday night, prompting an evacuation of players and spectators.

Police were called to Independence High School in Bakersfield a little after 8 p.m. after hearing shots fired during the school's football season opener. Officers discovered a 17-year-old victim who had been shot to death just outside the inner chain-link fence surrounding the field. Sergeant Eric Celedon indicated that the shooting stemmed from a fight that broke out among a group of people during the game, describing it as an isolated incident.

Authorities have not released any suspect information and the victim remains unidentified. Video from the stadium showed both players and spectators running away after the gunfire. In the aftermath, a prayer service was organized at Bakersfield Christian High School for the community. The investigation remains ongoing.
