Teen killed protecting brother after park soccer match turns violent in Phoenix
A 19-year-old Arizona teen died after intervening in a fight that erupted during a neighborhood soccer game, days before he was to start college.
On the evening of Aug. 6, 19-year-old Tumusifu Bazirake took part in a casual soccer match at Sueno Park in Phoenix, Arizona. When the opposing team grew upset after losing, they launched a prolonged assault on Bazirake and his brother, Jeanpaul, who was playing alongside him. Bazirake stepped in to protect his brother, enduring repeated blows as the fight continued for roughly 20 minutes before the attackers fled.
Emergency responders found him unresponsive and transported him to a local hospital, where he remained in extremely critical condition before succumbing to his injuries on Aug. 13. The Phoenix Police Department has classified the case as a homicide, but no arrests have been made and no suspects have been publicly identified. Bazirake had been preparing to begin community college on Aug. 24 with aspirations of becoming a firefighter.
