Teen loses leg after electrical blast on Queensland railway line, faces long recovery

On September 23, a teenager named Jai Hita was badly hurt after an electrical blast, reportedly caused by contact with a power line, occurred near the railway on Thomas Street in Dysart, Queensland. Emergency crews treated his extensive burns at the scene before transporting him to Dysart Hospital and subsequently to Mackay Base Hospital in critical condition. The injuries forced doctors to amputate his leg and left his right arm with severe damage, requiring future surgeries and extensive rehabilitation.
A family friend, Amber Hansell, set up a GoFundMe page that has already collected more than $36,000 toward his treatment and recovery expenses. The Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator and Queensland’s Electrical Safety Office are investigating the incident. Recovery prospects remain uncertain, and the family is seeking ongoing support.
