Teen rescued after capsized boat found near St. Lawrence Island, two others dead
A 15-year-old was pulled from a capsized skiff in the Bering Sea on Monday, while two companions were recovered dead.
An 18-foot boat that left Savoonga on Friday was found capsized roughly four miles east of St. Lawrence Island on Monday. A Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules crew spotted the vessel and deployed a raft with survival gear, rescuing a 15-year-old who was suffering from hypothermia. The nearby fishing vessel Northwest Explorer was directed to the scene with flares and later retrieved the two other occupants, who were unresponsive and later declared dead.
All three were taken aboard the fishing boat and transported to Nome. Alaska State Troopers had reported the group missing on Sunday evening, but poor weather delayed the Coast Guard’s aerial response until Monday morning. The survivors had been expected back by 3 a.m. Sunday.
