Teen rescued after fishing boat capsizes near St. Lawrence Island, two others dead
An 18‑foot fishing boat that left Savoonga was found capsized about four miles east of St. Lawrence Island on Monday. A Coast Guard HC‑130 Hercules crew spotted the vessel and lowered a raft with survival gear, pulling a 15‑year‑old who was suffering from hypothermia onto the hull. The nearby fishing vessel Northwest Explorer was directed to the scene, retrieved the two other occupants who were unresponsive, and took all three aboard. The boat and the bodies were then delivered to Nome, and Bob Little, commander of the Coast Guard’s Arctic District, offered condolences to the families.
