Teen suspect surrenders after fatal Bronx apartment shooting of fellow youth

Authorities reported that Kalvin Veloz, 16, surrendered on Tuesday and was charged with murder after shooting 15-year-old Riley Billingsley inside a Kingsbridge Heights apartment on Aug. 12. According to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, Veloz produced a firearm from his backpack, declared he would "throw some pain," and shot Billingsley in the head, causing instant death. A 13-year-old boy was struck by a ricocheted bullet, sustaining a chest graze and is now hospitalized in stable condition.

Billingsley’s 62-year-old grandmother, Elaine Rogers, expressed gratitude for the suspect’s surrender and called the act "evil." Veloz also faces charges of attempted murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon, with a Bronx prosecutor-led arraignment scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
