Teenage girl from Helsinki child home sentenced after rape and pregnancy during escape

A 13-year-old girl who fled a Helsinki child home in summer 2021 was repeatedly raped and became pregnant; the man responsible received a prison term.

In the summer of 2021 a 13-year-old resident of a Helsinki child home escaped with two companions, remaining on the run for weeks. During that period she reported repeated rapes and an unwanted pregnancy. Police identified a 23-year-old man who had offered the youths alcohol and cannabis in central Helsinki; he was later found guilty of aggravated child rape and a drug crime, earning a prison term of almost three years.

The court determined the girl was unable to give consent, despite her later statements about substance use. The pregnancy was aborted, and the victim received compensation. The case highlights the vulnerability of runaway youths, who often face exploitation and may be targeted by adults seeking to exploit their precarious situation.
