Tel Aviv officially names plaza after hostages protest movement
The city of Tel Aviv formally designated the square outside its museum as Hostages Square, cementing the name used by demonstrators for two years.
Tel Aviv’s city authorities announced on August 12 that the open space in front of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art will now bear the official name Hostages Square, a moniker popularized by protestors since the Oct. 7, 2023 assault. Mayor Ron Huldai, speaking at the ceremony, said the naming safeguards the historical record and honors the perseverance of families seeking the return of those taken. The square had become a weekly rally point for relatives of the abducted and for citizens urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to negotiate a hostage deal, which was eventually reached in October 2025.
Participants at the dedication, including Anushka Auerstock and Idan Levi, stressed the importance of remembering both the attack and the subsequent hardship. The Oct. 7 Hamas raid resulted in 1,221 Israeli deaths and 251 people taken hostage, of whom 168 were later released alive. Israel’s ensuing campaign in Gaza has caused tens of thousands of Palestinian casualties, according to the health ministry operating under Hamas authority.
