Telenor blames network interaction fault for widespread mobile outage affecting Norway
Telenor reported a major mobile network failure that disrupted calls, emergency numbers and train services for several hours, affecting all Norwegian operators.
A significant mobile network disruption struck Norway last week, lasting over two hours and impairing voice calls, emergency number access and railway traffic across the country. Telenor traced the incident to two separate issues: a momentary breach in its own infrastructure and a longer-lasting malfunction in the technology that coordinates traffic among all mobile operators. The latter problem impacted subscribers of Telenor, Telia and Ice.
Telenor's CEO Birgitte Engebretsen emphasized the need for industry-wide collaboration to strengthen network inter-operability and prevent future incidents. The national communications authority, Nkom, has announced supervisory action, and Telenor will provide a comprehensive incident report once its analysis is complete.
Why it matters
The outage shows how inter-operator dependencies can cripple essential services, prompting calls for coordinated telecom safeguards.
