Telenor outage cripples emergency services and rail traffic across Norway

A major failure in Telenor's network on Thursday halted phone service, stopping emergency calls and train operations throughout much of Norway.

On Thursday, a dual fault in Telenor's infrastructure caused a nationwide communications collapse, affecting both public safety and rail transport. At 15:13 a network break activated a backup system, yet a concurrent error produced incomplete data packets in the software handling voice traffic between Telenor and other carriers, blocking many calls. As a result, emergency responders could not be reached and all train traffic was halted for many hours, with some citizens also losing access to personal calls.

Telenor's press officer Anders Krokan said the analysis involves multiple internal and external teams and will take time. Security expert Olav Lysne urged the company to disclose more details, and NSM director Arne Christian Haugstøyl emphasized the need for robust redundancy and contingency plans.
