Tempus AI's $1.5 billion Personalis acquisition gains investor focus after cancer therapy news

Tempus AI's planned purchase of Merck-backed Personalis for $1.5 billion is drawing heightened market attention following the announcement of new personalized cancer treatments by Merck and Moderna.

Tempus AI announced in July that it would acquire Personalis, a Merck-backed genomics firm, for $1.5 billion, a deal that initially attracted little notice. Personalis provides sophisticated sequencing and analytics used in cancer drug development, and its technology has become more valuable after Merck and Moderna unveiled a suite of personalized cancer therapies. The news caused Personalis' stock to climb 22% since Tuesday and lifted Tempus shares as investors bet on a possible renegotiation of the purchase price.

Analysts note that Merck, owning 13% of Personalis, is unlikely to alter the terms, and the company declined to comment. Nonetheless, some market watchers argue Merck's M&A group might pursue a direct acquisition, leveraging the billions added to its and Moderna's market capitalizations by the new treatments.

Why it matters

The deal could reshape ownership of key cancer-genomics technology and affect biotech market valuations.
