Ten Australian YouTubers, from Eddie Woo to Tash Sultana, join NFSA collection
Ten Australian YouTube channels, including Eddie Woo and Tash Sultana, have been inducted into the National Film and Sound Archive and will be honored at Parliament House.
In partnership with YouTube, the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia has added ten local channels to its collection, marking the archive’s inaugural inclusion of online creators. Among the honorees are maths educator Eddie Woo, guitarist-singer Tash Sultana, animation studio GLITCH, and personalities such as Wengie (Wendy Ayche) and the Outback Boys. Together the channels total more than 36 billion video views and 84 million subscribers worldwide.
NFSA chief executive Patrick McIntyre highlighted YouTube’s dominance in Australian video consumption and its significance as a cultural export. The archive will preserve not only videos but also related comments, likes and oral histories to capture each channel’s “cultural wrapper.” A formal ceremony at Parliament House will recognise the inductees on Monday, with many creators describing the honor as surreal and a testament to Australia’s diversity.
Why it matters
It shows how digital creators are now recognized as part of a nation’s cultural heritage.
