Tencent signs $7 billion lease for 100,000 Oracle AI chips in Southeast Asia
Tencent has agreed to a five-year lease of roughly 100,000 advanced AI chips from Oracle’s Southeast Asian data centres, a deal valued at about $7 billion.
Tencent has entered its largest overseas leasing contract with U.S. cloud provider Oracle, securing access to around 100,000 cutting-edge AI chips housed in several Southeast Asian data centres. The five-year agreement, worth an estimated $7 billion with an upfront payment of about 30%, is designed to fuel Tencent’s aggressive push into large-language-model development and AI-driven services. The deal highlights the growing demand for high-performance computing as Chinese tech firms scramble for hardware amid tightening U.S. export curbs.
Oracle and Tencent did not immediately comment, and one outlet was unable to independently confirm the report. The partnership follows Tencent’s recent launch of a preview AI image-generation model that offers text-to-image and image-to-image capabilities for professional creators.
Why it matters
The lease gives Tencent critical AI hardware unavailable in China, boosting its competitiveness under tightening U.S. export limits.
