Tennessee tackle David Sanders transforms after freshman doubts, mentors new recruit
David Sanders, once worried about being labeled a five-star bust, has reshaped his game and is now guiding fellow freshman Gabriel Osenda.
David Sanders entered his sophomore campaign after a freshman season that sparked fears of becoming a highly touted bust, yet he finished the year starting the final six games at right tackle. A new strength regimen under Derek Owings added bulk and quickness to his 6-foot-6, 310-pound frame, allowing him to move back to left tackle, his preferred position. Recognizing similar pressure in fellow five-star recruit Gabriel Osenda, Sanders shared his own rookie-year doubts about mastering the playbook and earning playing time.
Coach Glen Elarbee highlighted Sanders’ improved technique and physique, calling him “freaky talented.” The Vols’ offensive line, which wilted late last season, hopes depth and enhanced conditioning will sustain performance, with several returning starters and versatile players competing for spots.
Why it matters
Sanders' turnaround illustrates how player development and mentorship can boost a college football team's competitiveness.
