Tensions between Police and Civil Guard in Ceuta over migrant influx and gate opening order
A clash between Policía Nacional and Guardia Civil commanders occurred as migrants surged into a Spanish customs area near Ceuta, prompting the gate to be opened on government orders.
On a recent day, more than a hundred migrants gathered at the Tarajal jetty and moved into a Spanish customs enclosure close to the Ceuta border. Senior commanders of Policía Nacional and Guardia Civil debated whether to force the migrants back across the border or allow them entry. The Guardia Civil’s operations chief ordered the gate to be opened, a move attributed to the Government, which let a large crowd flow into the city.
The Asociación Unificada de la Guardia Civil warned that women and children were at risk of crushing. Officials criticized the Ministry of the Interior for not providing clear protocols or enough personnel. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska later announced plans to extend the Tarajal jetty to improve border control.
