Terra Nova dismisses RN's five-year fiscal plan as unrealistic and poorly drafted
The progressive think tank Terra Nova criticised the Rassemblement National’s five-year budget blueprint, calling it contradictory and lacking credible financial strategy.
In a detailed analysis released after the Institut de l’Entreprise’s review, Terra Nova argued that the Rassemblement National’s fiscal roadmap fails to demonstrate sound public-finance management. Directors Thierry Pech and public-finance expert François Thomazeau identified multiple errors, including contradictory numbers and identical graphs used for different reference years. The think tank scrutinised the RN’s plan to implement a source-deduction mechanism for VAT, a measure the European Commission said would need to recover a 12 billion-euro gap in French VAT receipts.
Terra Nova also noted that the RN’s promised savings on France’s contribution to the EU budget far surpass the net contribution of 7.9 billion euros. Overall, the report concluded that once the RN’s 125 proposed measures are stripped of their inflated claims, only a few billion euros of genuine savings remain.
Why it matters
The critique highlights potential fiscal risks if the RN’s unrealistic budget proposals were implemented.
