Tesco and Waitrose issue recalls over mislabeled foods that could trigger allergies
Tesco and Waitrose have each launched a recall of specific products after discovering undeclared allergens on the labels, urging customers not to consume them.
Two major UK supermarkets have initiated product recalls after labeling errors exposed hidden allergens. Tesco’s Finest Caesar & Smoked Bacon Coleslaw, sold in 270 g packages with a September 4 use-by date, may actually contain Four Cheese Potato Salad that includes mustard, an ingredient not declared on the packaging. The Food Standards Agency warns mustard-allergic shoppers to avoid the product and return it for a full refund, no receipt required.
In a separate case, Waitrose & Partners is pulling its 500 g Rhubarb Crumble because it contains oats, a source of gluten, which was omitted from the label, endangering those with oat or gluten sensitivities and coeliac disease. The product bears a use-by date of 19 August 2026 and includes freezing instructions. Both retailers have issued apologies and emphasized that no other items are affected. Health organisations note that reactions can range from mild skin irritation to severe anaphylaxis or digestive distress.
