Tesla driver claims he was asleep on FSD as his car plowed into CHP patrol cars

A Tesla operating in Full Self-Driving mode allegedly collided with California Highway Patrol vehicles on I-80, seriously injuring two officers.

Video released by California Highway Patrol shows a Tesla speeding past emergency markers and ramming into the rear of a stationary patrol vehicle on I-80, where officers were responding to a prior incident. The driver told investigators he had fallen asleep while using the Full Self-Driving feature. Two CHP officers were seriously hurt and taken to a hospital for treatment.

This crash follows multiple collisions involving parked emergency vehicles that led NHTSA to open a probe into Tesla’s Autopilot system in 2021, later issuing a report that the technology failed to keep drivers engaged. Tesla issued an update in 2023 adding more alerts, but regulators have since launched a new investigation to assess whether those changes are sufficient.

Why it matters

The accident highlights ongoing safety concerns about semi-autonomous driving systems and their impact on public-safety responders.
