Tesla ends sales of its Solar Roof tiles, shifting to standard panels
Tesla has stopped offering its Solar Roof product, telling installers it is no longer available and will focus on conventional solar panels.
Tesla has formally ceased sales of its Solar Roof tiles, notifying the network of installers that the product can no longer be ordered and will be replaced by standard solar panels. The move follows website changes that now route the former Solar Roof page to the company’s solar panel site, and the removal of the Solar Roof option from the Tesla Energy navigation menu. Sources close to the program say the company concluded the roof tiles are not financially sustainable, a view echoed by internal assessments and a Wood Mackenzie report that recorded only roughly 3,000 U.S. installations since launch.
Elon Musk had earlier admitted in 2021 that the venture incurred significant overspending and delays. While the Solar Roof effort fell short of its goal of 1,000 weekly installations, Tesla’s conventional panels are seeing stronger demand, prompting plans for a $10 billion manufacturing plant near Houston, Texas, to boost output.
Why it matters
The shutdown signals Tesla’s shift away from costly roof tiles toward more profitable solar panel production.
