Tesla launches free replacement for Powerwall 2 units posing fire hazard
Tesla is offering free swaps of Powerwall 2 battery systems after regulators warned that certain units could overheat and catch fire.
A safety alert issued by the Office for Product Safety and Standards identified that specific Powerwall 2 battery packs may develop internal cell defects, potentially leading to thermal runaway and fire. The defect stems from excessive lithium plating in cells made by an external supplier, which can cause the casing to crack and short-circuit. Tesla has responded by remotely discharging the impacted units and is arranging free replacements for customers, who should verify their status via the Tesla app and contact their installer or Tesla support.
The regulator noted that the product fails to meet the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016. Powerwall batteries store solar or grid energy for use during outages, making the remediation critical for household power continuity.
