Tesla prepares to unveil revamped $200,000 Roadster at Texas test site
Tesla will reveal its redesigned Roadster on Thursday, with a $200,000 price tag and $50,000 reservation fee.
Tesla is set to showcase its long-delayed Roadster at a SpaceX test facility in McGregor, Texas, on Thursday evening. The high-performance sports car, originally unveiled as a prototype in 2017 with an expected 2020 delivery date, retains a $200,000 price and a $50,000 reservation cost. While Elon Musk has described the model as financially marginal, Morningstar analyst Seth Goldstein argues it could serve as Tesla's new halo car, highlighting the company's engineering prowess.
Musk also noted that the vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under one second, emphasizing its collaboration with SpaceX. The launch arrives as Tesla shifts focus toward AI-driven self-driving technology, the Optimus humanoid robot, and the Cybercab robotaxi concept. The original Roadster, built on a Lotus Elise chassis, paved the way for later models such as the Model S and Model 3.
Why it matters
The Roadster launch could reshape Tesla's brand image and signal its tech ambitions beyond mainstream EVs.
