Tesla sets Q2 2027 target for owners to join robotaxi fleet
Tesla announced on its Q3 earnings call that it aims to let customers add their cars to the robotaxi network in the second quarter of 2027.
Tesla used its third-quarter earnings call to set a deadline of Q2 2027 for owners to opt their vehicles into the company's robotaxi network, according to VP of Autonomous Driving Ashok Elluswamy. He explained that the same software powering Cybercabs and Model Y will be included in the upcoming V15 release, allowing customer cars to operate within Tesla's geofences and fleet management system. The announcement follows a rise in Full Self-Driving uptake, with more than three-quarters of new North American buyers choosing the feature this quarter.
Despite this, Tesla's current robotaxi fleet remains limited to a few hundred vehicles in Texas and Florida, some still supervised, and a handful of fully driverless Cybercabs in Austin. The firm also highlighted a new safety site showing 3.3 million autonomous miles driven, up from 380,000 reported earlier. Nonetheless, widespread deployment faces significant regulatory approvals, insurance challenges, and hardware constraints on older models.
Why it matters
The timeline signals when Tesla owners might earn income from driverless rides, but legal and technical hurdles could delay widespread adoption.
