Texas Attorney General sues OpenAI over alleged harms from ChatGPT

Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit in Collin County against OpenAI and its founder Sam Altman, claiming the chatbot endangers Texans.

Ken Paxton, Texas’ attorney general, lodged a complaint in Collin County district court targeting OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman over what he describes as dangerous lapses in ChatGPT’s oversight. The complaint lists a range of harms, from facilitating violent attacks and self-harm to degrading professional reputations and fostering addictive use among children. Paxton requests a broad injunction that would bar minors from the platform and mandate that any new AI models receive approval from a court-appointed evaluator.

This case adds to a recent wave of Texas lawsuits against companies like Meta, TikTok, Snapchat and Roblox under state consumer-protection statutes. OpenAI has not yet responded, and the litigation occurs as Paxton campaigns for a U.S. Senate seat, with the AI arena also featuring rivals such as Elon Musk’s Grok project.

Why it matters

The case could set precedent for state regulation of AI tools and impact how companies deploy chatbots to the public.

How the sides frame it

Left-leaning coverage emphasizes the alleged harms and political context of the lawsuit, while centrist coverage stresses claims that OpenAI misled consumers and lacked safety safeguards for teens.
