Texas Children’s Hospital Opens Nation's First Clinic for Detransition Care
Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston has launched the United States' first clinic dedicated to detransition services, as required by a settlement with the Department of Justice.
Following a settlement with the Department of Justice, Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston has opened the country's inaugural detransition clinic. The facility offers a comprehensive suite of services—including endocrinology, surgical care, primary care, fertility counseling, psychiatry, psychology, social work, case management, and speech pathology—for individuals who have previously received gender-transition treatment, serving patients up to age 21 and providing obstetric and gynecologic care for older adults.
The settlement obligates the hospital to provide these services at no cost for five years and bars it from performing gender-transition procedures on minors. It also required a $10 million payment to address alleged false billing to insurers. Vanessa Sivadge, founder of Protect Texas Children and the clinic’s whistleblower, expressed gratitude to Attorney General Ken Paxton and her attorneys for making the clinic possible. The clinic’s website indicates it is now accepting appointment requests, though an official opening date has not been announced.
Why it matters
It marks the first U.S. facility offering free detransition care, reflecting new legal constraints on gender-transition services for minors.
