Texas clears massive voter registration backlog ahead of midterm deadline

Texas election officials say they have processed over 500,000 delayed registration records, assuring voters that registrations before Oct. 5 remain valid for the Nov. 3 election.

A system update problem dating back to October 2025 prevented online voter registration transactions from reaching county registrars for months, resulting in a backlog of over 500,000 records across Texas. Harris County processed roughly 75,000 delayed files, with only a few hundred awaiting final precinct placement, while Dallas County handled 68,104 late records and completed all applications, including 13,677 new registrations.

The Texas Secretary of State’s Office stated that the registration date is the day of the Department of Public Safety transaction and that voters who registered by Oct. 5 can vote in the Nov. 3 midterm, with provisional ballots available for unresolved cases. Grant funding is being offered to counties to cover extra staffing costs. Voting rights groups say the delay has hurt trust, particularly among young, working-class Texans of color, and they urge voters to verify their status before the deadline. Early voting begins Oct. 19, and officials stress the importance of confirming registration promptly.

Why it matters

Ensuring all eligible Texans can vote despite the backlog is crucial for fair participation in the upcoming midterm elections.
