Texas GOP backs YouTuber Brandon Herrera amid controversy over past jokes

Following the resignation of former Republican Rep. Herrera, 30, previously challenged Gonzales and was initially opposed by both a fellow Republican, Mr. Johnson, and President Trump. Campaign ads have emphasized old videos where Herrera used coarse language to insult gun-control activist Shannon Watts and mocked other public figures.

Democratic challenger Katy Padilla Stout has pointed to these incidents, arguing that Herrera's style is unsuitable for a congressional role. Herrera has responded by rejecting accusations of antisemitism and describing his controversial material as part of a historical collection. The race now centers on whether voters will accept his controversial past or seek an alternative candidate.
