Texas governor urges Justice Department to probe Islamic washing stations at major airports
Gov. Greg Abbott asked the Justice Department to investigate Islamic foot-wash facilities at Dallas/Fort Worth and George Bush Intercontinental airports, labeling them discriminatory.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced he has referred the Islamic ablution rooms at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport to the Justice Department, asserting they represent religion-based favoritism prohibited by anti-discrimination statutes. Previously, Abbott ordered a review of state grants to the airports and warned of potential funding losses, and he also asked the U.S. Department of Transportation to investigate.
In a letter to Attorney General Todd Blanche, Abbott highlighted that the facilities contain copies of the Qur’an, prayer rugs, beads and a turbah, insisting that government-owned airports should not finance Muslim-only spaces. DFW had considered adding a new station in Terminal D but later abandoned the plan, though Abbott maintains two stations are already in use. Houston Mayor John Whitmire defended the IAH ablution room, saying it meets the needs of Muslim travelers and is part of an interfaith chapel open to all. The governor urged the Justice Department to halt what he described as discriminatory practices.
Why it matters
It raises questions about how publicly funded airports accommodate religious practices without violating anti-discrimination rules.
