In a recent column, Dawn Buckingham, elected Texas Land Commissioner, emphasizes that reliable energy, a stable food supply and national fortification are essential to the country's long-term prosperity. She details the Texas General Land Office’s management of more than 13 million acres, over 3,400 miles of shoreline and extensive mineral interests, which fund the Permanent School Fund and veterans programs. The agency’s activities include leasing land for oil and natural gas, advancing carbon-capture and storage, and collaborating with USA Rare Earth and the Trump administration to lessen China’s grip on rare-earth magnets.
Texas’s leading cattle industry benefits from GLO grazing leases, reinforcing food security. On the security front, the GLO works with law-enforcement on state-owned border lands and partners with the United States Army Corps of Engineers on the Coastal Texas Project, a massive storm-risk and beach-restoration initiative. Buckingham concludes that Texas’s land and resource management strengthens national energy independence, food production and overall defense capabilities.
