Texas murder suspect remains in Italian jail as extradition stalls over death-penalty guarantees

Lee Gilley, 39, is charged with the October 2024 murder of his pregnant wife, Christa Bauer Gilley, in their Houston home. After removing his ankle monitor, he fled to Italy in May, where he was captured by police in Turin and placed in a local jail. Texas criminal defense veteran Dick DeGuerin, representing Gilley, said this is an unprecedented case of a client fleeing abroad.

Harris County prosecutors withdrew the death-penalty option after Italian judges required written guarantees that capital punishment would not be pursued. Italian courts further insist that a life-without-parole sentence must also be ruled out, prompting the U.S. to provide clarification before a September 30 deadline, after which a status conference is set for October 7.
