Texas Republican plans resolution condemning Sharia law before November elections

Representative Keith Self, a co-founder of the Sharia Free America Caucus, intends to introduce a concurrent resolution on Thursday that condemns Sharia law and calls for a House vote before the November midterm elections. The text declares the Constitution as the sole permissible legal authority and contends that Sharia undermines liberty, religious freedom, gender equality, and free speech. The resolution lists specific ways Sharia allegedly restricts personal autonomy, diet, and social activities.

Five other Republicans - Eli Crane, Randy Weber, Paul Gosar, Buddy Carter and Riley Moore - co-sponsored the measure, saying it highlights a rising threat to American freedoms. The push follows controversy over Islamic complexes such as the East Plano Islamic Center in Texas, which opponents claim could impose Sharia principles. Self’s office expressed optimism that the resolution will soon be brought to a floor vote.
