Texas Southern appoints Seton Hall assistant as head coach amid campus protests
The Texas Southern Board of Regents approved Corey Lowery, formerly an assistant at Seton Hall, as the new men’s basketball head coach, sparking demonstrations from players, students and alumni who favored interim coach Shyrone Chatman.
The Texas Southern University Board of Regents voted to install Corey Lowery, who left Seton Hall where he served under Shaheen Holloway, as the new men’s basketball head coach. Simultaneously, former Jackson State one outlet director Ashley Robinson received approval as the university’s one outlet director. The announcement triggered a protest by players, students and alumni who preferred interim coach Shyrone Chatman, who took over after Johnny Jones resigned in April and spent the summer recruiting the squad.
Demonstrators displayed signs, staged a walk-out during the presentation, and later met with President J.W. Crawford. Lowery, a Piscataway High School graduate with 30 years of coaching experience, declined comment until the hiring was finalized.
Chatman’s supporters posted video of the campus march, emphasizing their desire to retain him. The board’s decision reflects a shift in leadership despite the evident campus dissent.
Why it matters
The hiring reshapes Texas Southern's basketball program and highlights tensions between administration decisions and player preferences.
