Texas teacher breaks down after seniors struggle with basic reading and writing
A Houston teacher posted a video showing he became emotional when senior students could not read two paragraphs or write a simple sentence on the second day of classes.
Darius Williams, who teaches a non-foundational career-technical program at Wheatley High School in Houston, posted a video in which he broke down during a lesson on the second day of school. He had asked senior students to read two short paragraphs and write a single sentence, but the class could not even supply four words. Williams expressed dismay that many 17- and 18-year-olds still lack basic reading and writing skills, noting the emotional toll on teachers.
The Instagram video has drawn more than 144,000 views and sparked discussion about literacy challenges in the district. KRIV-TV and KPRC-TV explained that Williams’ role focuses on elective, industry-oriented courses rather than core academics. The Houston Independent School District, while not addressing the specific claims, said it is proud of student progress and aims to identify and support learners with additional needs. Wheatley High School has previously been placed under state oversight due to repeated low performance ratings.
