Texas voter rolls surpass 19 million ahead of crucial midterms

Texas has recorded over 19 million registered voters, a new high before the November 3 midterm election, marking modest gains since 2024.

Ahead of the November 3 midterm election, Texas voter registration hit a record exceeding 19 million, according to a release from the Texas Secretary of State. Compared with the November 2024 general election, registrations are up 2.2%, and 2% higher than the March primary, while the figure is 7.7% above the 2022 midterms. Suburban counties—including Kaufman (27% growth), Waller (23%), Ellis (21%) and Hays (21%)—lead the surge, whereas Tarrant County, viewed as a swing area, recorded a loss of 32,503 voters, a 2.6% drop.

A recent software error at the Texas Department of Public Safety left half a million applications unprocessed, but officials say the issue has been resolved. A separate state error delayed address-update records for several thousand voters in Bexar, Travis, Williamson and Hays counties. Registrations postmarked or submitted by Oct. 5 will be counted, and affected voters may cast provisional ballots. Secretary of State Howden Robert Howden emphasized the importance of every eligible Texan participating in the upcoming election.

Why it matters

The record registration level signals heightened voter engagement in a pivotal midterm election that could shape Texas politics.
